HVAC Set up for Cannabis Cultivation
If there is one key to the successful cultivation of Cannabis and any indoor greenhouse type plant, it is the HVAC System and its control (plus humidity control). (HVAC=Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning)
Cannabis is a photoperiod plant, meaning that the amount of light received each day decides when the plant starts flowering, or making buds. As of August 2024, medical cannabis is legal in 38 of 50 states, and recreational cannabis is legal in 24 states. According to Statista, Colorado led the nation in volume of cannabis production in 2022 with 623 metric tons cultivated. Colorado was followed in amount produced by Oregon (614), California (577), Washington (317), and Michigan (203).
Basic needs for a cannabis plant
– Daylight
– Water
– Humidity & temperature
– Airflow
– Nutrients
– Medium
Basic steps of cultivation
– Choose seeds
– Plant seeds
– Water the plants
– Provide organic nutrients
– Monitor light, temperature, air, etc.
– Spot the difference between vegetative and flowering growth stage
– Harvest
A cannabis seedling or clone (made from a mature plant) is germinated and planted, which eventually leads to the vegetative (veg) stage. In this stage, the plant is given 18-24 hours of light a day. Once the flowering stage is reached, the plant is given 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark each day. The flowering or budding stage leads to harvest.
Cultivation timeline overview
- Growing cannabis indoors can take anywhere between 20 to 30 weeks or more
- A high-quality seed will germinate in 3 to 10 days
- The seed will turn to a seedling after 2 to 3 weeks
- After the seedling has been transplanted to a new grow environment, it enters the vegetative stage, which can last anywhere from 3 to 16 weeks
- Rapid growth occurs in the veg stage
- After the veg stage, plants go into flowering stage, which will likely last 8 to 11 weeks
- Buds can then be harvested, dried, and cured, which takes around 2 to 3 weeks
- Various factors affect cultivation time, including strain type, desired plant size, and growing setup
